SCI-FI SATURDAY!  CLASSIC FEATURE ::: Tonight’s films ::: Walerian Borowczyk’s LES ASTRONAUTES (short, 1959) & LES JEUX DES ANGES (short, 1964).  Born in Kwilcz, Poland, Walerian Borowczyk trained as a painter and lithographer, winning Poland’s National Prize in 1953. He began his film career as a film poster designer, then started making short animated films in the late 1950s. Moving to France in the early 1960s, he gained a reputation as a leading animator before switching to live-action features, which have become increasingly controversial due to erotic and sensational content.

83677-les-astronautes-0-230-0-345-cropLes_Jeux_des_AngesWalerian Borowczyk’s  LES ASTRONAUTES (short, 1959) tells the story of an inventor who builds a homemade spacecraft, and uses it to have various adventures, including peeping at women, visiting ‘human’ planets, and becoming involved in intergalatic warfare. There’s a bit of a twist ending, too.  Noted French filmmaker Chris Marker (La Jetée) is credited as a collaborator on the film, but he wasn’t involved in its production. Marker added his name as a favor to Borowczyk, who did not have a French work permit at the time.

Walerian Borowczyk’s LES JEUX DES ANGES (short, 1964) Is a surrealist, semi-abstract animated film, based around the theme of angels being processed by a nightmarish factory. It has been interpreted as an allegory of the concentration camp experience and as a portrait of the industrialisation and collectivisation of the Soviet period.
