All that changes when the townsfolk start disappearing, and are replaced by eerie alien duplicates.

SCI-FI SATURDAY!  CLASSIC FEATURE ::: Tonight’s film ::: THIS ISLAND EARTH (1955)

Film1955-ThisIslandEarth-OriginalPosterThis Island Earth (1955) directed by Joseph M. Newman and Jack Arnold is based on the novel of the same name by Raymond F. Jones which was originally published in the magazine Thrilling Wonder Stories as three related novelettes: “The Alien Machine” in the June 1949 issue, “The Shroud of Secrecy” in December 1949, and “The Greater Conflict” in February 1950.  Scientist Cal Meacham (Rex Reason) solves a mysterious puzzle that allows him access to a highly secretive program — led by the mysterious Exeter (Jeff Morrow) — that has assembled the world’s greatest scientific minds in an attempt to quickly learn how to generate and store nuclear power. But with the help of fellow scientists Ruth Adams (Faith Domergue) and Steve Carlson (Russell Johnson), Meacham soon discovers that his host is not what he claims to be.

SCI-FI SATURDAY!  CLASSIC FEATURE ::: Tonight’s film ::: Alejandro Jodorowsky’s FANDO Y LIS (1968)

Fando Y Lis is Alejandro Jodorowsky’s first feature-length film, based on a play of the same name by Fernando Arrabal. When it premiered at the Acapulco Film Festival in 1968, a riot broke out over what was perceived to be its blasphemous nature and the film was subsequently banned in Mexico.

fando-669x1024Filmed in black and white and with a very low budget, the film follows Fando (Sergio Kleiner) and his paraplegic lover Lis (Diana Mariscal) as they make their way through a grim post-apocalyptic landscape searching for the town of Tar. The mythic town is rumored to make all of your dreams come true. Along the way, they meet up with a very strange cast of characters. They come upon a ruined town where the women try to lure Fando into sex games and Lis is forced to fend for herself. Other scenarios involve people bathing in mud, where Fando leaves Lis to stand on her own for a while; a group of cross-dressers who dress Fando and Lis in each other’s clothing in a surreal gender bending scene; and a rather unsettling scene where Fando undresses Lis and allows strange men touch her naked body. One sequence in particular involves four old women playing cards, with the winner of each hand getting up close and personal with a young, buff man. I can’t say why, but for me the depravity of this scene had a similar disturbing feel to Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Salo, or the Hundred Days of Sodom, which wasn’t released until 1975. By the time the film reaches its conclusion, Lis has been transformed into a Christ-like figure.

SCI-FI SATURDAY!  CLASSIC FEATURE ::: Tonight’s films ::: Walerian Borowczyk’s LES ASTRONAUTES (short, 1959) & LES JEUX DES ANGES (short, 1964).  Born in Kwilcz, Poland, Walerian Borowczyk trained as a painter and lithographer, winning Poland’s National Prize in 1953. He began his film career as a film poster designer, then started making short animated films in the late 1950s. Moving to France in the early 1960s, he gained a reputation as a leading animator before switching to live-action features, which have become increasingly controversial due to erotic and sensational content.

83677-les-astronautes-0-230-0-345-cropLes_Jeux_des_AngesWalerian Borowczyk’s  LES ASTRONAUTES (short, 1959) tells the story of an inventor who builds a homemade spacecraft, and uses it to have various adventures, including peeping at women, visiting ‘human’ planets, and becoming involved in intergalatic warfare. There’s a bit of a twist ending, too.  Noted French filmmaker Chris Marker (La Jetée) is credited as a collaborator on the film, but he wasn’t involved in its production. Marker added his name as a favor to Borowczyk, who did not have a French work permit at the time.

Walerian Borowczyk’s LES JEUX DES ANGES (short, 1964) Is a surrealist, semi-abstract animated film, based around the theme of angels being processed by a nightmarish factory. It has been interpreted as an allegory of the concentration camp experience and as a portrait of the industrialisation and collectivisation of the Soviet period.

Singer Farid ul-Atrash discovers it and unleashes the female genie within, thus inspiring his next stage show (from which, sadly, most of the more outlandish images from this movie originate).

afficheTIME MASTERS Les Maîtres du temps (lit. The Masters of Time, a.k.a. Time Masters, Az idő urai in Hungarian, 1982) is a dazzling animated space epic from René Laloux, the director of the cult classic “Fantastic Planet” and the celebrated graphic artist Moebius, best known for his work on Heavy Metal magazine. Piel, a little boy, is left marooned on the planet Perdide after both his parents have been killed by giant hornet-like aliens. Thankfully an emergency transmitter provides him with instantaneous communication with Jaffar, an adventurer who was a friend of his father.

This Jaffar convinces the current passengers on his ship, an exiled prince and princess, that a rescue mission must be undertaken. Its a long way to Perdide though, so Jaffar first picks up an old technician who knows that planet. Together with two telepathic aliens they start their mission to save Piel, all the time talking to the boy and trying to avoid him walking into danger. But on the way to Perdide, Jaffar and his friends encounter a lot of trouble themselves, including a hive of malignant angels and what seems to be a traitor in their midst.

SCI-FI & HORROR SATURDAY!  CLASSIC FEATURE ::: Tonight’s film :::
plan_9_from_outer_space_lc_02
“PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE” (1959) With its incoherent plot, jaw-droppingly odd dialogue, inept acting, threadbare production design, and special effects so shoddy that they border on the surreal, Plan 9 From Outer Space has often been called the worst movie ever made. But it’s an oddly endearing disaster; boasting genuine enthusiasm and undeniable charm, it is the work of people who loved movies and loved making them, even if they displayed little visible talent. In Plan 9, alien invaders attempt to conquer the world by raising the dead, starting with an old man dressed in a Dracula costume (Bela Lugosi, in a few minutes of left-over footage grafted into this film), his much-younger and well-proportioned wife (Maila “Vampira” Nurmi), and a remarkably overweight police officer (Tor Johnson). Often funny and consistently entertaining (if almost always for the wrong reasons), Plan 9 From Outer Space is an anti-masterpiece if there ever was one, and as Criswell so brilliantly puts it, “Can you PROVE it didn’t happen?!?” Its legendary director Edward D. Wood Jr. was played by Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s 1994 biopic, Ed Wood.

SCI-FI SATURDAY! Tonight’s film ::: La Planète Sauvage “FANTASTIC PLANET” (French, 1973)

alain-goranguer-la-planete-sauvageOn the fantastic planet of Ygam, located in a far solar system, a race of huge blue creatures called Draags keep Oms as domesticated pets. Oms are the descendants of the human survivors of Earth, comparably antlike in size and mistreated by the Draags. With the aid of a Draag knowledge device, an escaped orphaned Om manages to unite a society of wild Oms to revolt against their oppression. The wild Oms attack the Draags in their most vulnerable spot, a mystical moon orbiting around their home world: a moon which holds a powerful secret to the Draags’ existence.

FANTASTIC PLANET (French: La Planète sauvage, Czech: Divoká planeta, lit. The Wild Planet) is an international production between France and Czechoslovakia and was distributed in the United States by Roger Corman. The story, which shows humans living on a strange planet dominated by giant humanoid aliens who consider them animals, is based on the 1957 novel Oms en série by French writer Stefan Wul.  A working title for the film while it was in development was Sur la planète Ygam (On the Planet Ygam),[2] which is where most of the story takes place, but the actual title (the Fantastic/Savage Planet) is the name of Ygam’s moon. The film won the special jury prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival
