“Music is a mathematical, visceral, and psych-spiritual microcosm of the universe; as is humanity. It is extraordinarily powerful and at the same time subtle. Most are unaware of its nature and possibilities. It’s power is, in its primordial form, morally neutral. Human intention and application make it either beneficial or destructive.”
– Dawoud Kringle

“I had composed songs, I sang, and played the vina. Practising this music I arrived at a stage where I touched the music of the spheres. Then every soul became a musical note, and all life became music. Inspired by it I spoke to the people, and those who were attracted by my words listened to them instead of listening to my songs.”   – Hazrat Inayat Khan

One of the first artists to join the Leilah roster is musician, writer, and artist Dawoud Kringle.

Dawoud’s musical endeavors span over four decades. A multi instrumentalist (he’s proficient on guitar, sitar, dilruba, and bass), composer, improviser, and performer, as well as having produced many recordings (including all his solo and ensemble releases), he has toured the U.S. and Europe as a band leader, and composed and performed / recorded music for film theater, and dance. Whether performing as a solo artist or with his ensemble God’s Unruly Friends, Dawoud’s music possesses an transcendent quality that few achieve.

Dawoud’s literary endeavors began as a poet. After honing his skills writing for several magazines and newspapers, he began work on his first novel, A Quantum Hijra. It was finished in 2010, and published by Leilah Publications in 2013. The book is an epic Sufi science fiction tale that is one of the most unique ever told by a storyteller. Russell Peterson’s chance meeting with a Sufi mystic propels him into an adventure and spiritual initiation where he faces unpredictable dangers, unimaginable rewards, and a world where the lines between science and the mystical experience no longer exist. A tale of mind-bending political intrigue, Islamic theology, mysticism, arcane musical theory, tragedy, and spiritual awakening spanning thousands of years, Quantum Hijra was compared to such books as Frank Herbert’s Dune and Robert Anton Wilson’s Schrödinger’s Cat.

Dawoud’s second book, A Mansion with Many Rooms, is a collection of poetry and short stories. The essence of the poetry, and the content of the stories explores in a new perspective some of the ideas and concepts established in Quantum Hijra, and forms a literary bridge to Dawoud’s upcoming works. The stories range from political intrigue, science fiction, and Islamic horror. The poetry immerses the reader in the essence of humanity’s search for inner truth, and leads from pain and tragedy to dignity and triumph.

As of this writing, Dawoud has three books in the works. Apotheosis Now is a Sufi science fiction story that explores the themes of time travel, human awakening, and the marriage of science and religion first examined in A Quantum Hijra form a very different perspective. The Analects of Dawoud Kringle is a collection of discourses offering insights on religion, mysticism, politics, philosophy, and music. There is also a textbook on the spiritual principles behind music in the works.

Dawoud’s art work arose from what, for years, was a hobby. After urging from friends, he submitted some of his work to Openings Collective, and was accepted in an exhibit in the summer of 2015. His work was well received. After other exhibits in the New York City area, Dawoud’s work (multi media use of collage, painting and other media) is expanding into other realms. Plans are in the works to expand on this, and explore video / film in the future.

All of Dawoud’s work (music, literature, art) seeks to transcend the paradigms of the listener’s / reader’s consciousness, and invoke a state of peace wherein pain and tragedy are transformed into beauty, triumph, and an “at-oneness” with the Absolute.
